5 Food Groups

Today's Topic: The Five Food Groups

What Are They?

The five main food groups are fruit, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. They are the groups of food you want to have a part of on your plate. A healthy meal consists of portions of each group. You may be familiar with the MyPlate.

Fruit

Fruits are one of the main groups. Your body needs them because they provide your body with many vitamins, such as Vitamin C and vitamin A. They are also good for digestion. Fruits are generally healthy because they are not full of fat, and no fruits have cholesterol in them. Another benefit is that eating fruits gives you energy. If you do not eat enough fruit, you don't get enough dietary fiber.
