Today's Topic: The Five Food Groups
What Are They?
The five main food groups are fruit, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. They are the groups of food you want to have a part of on your plate. A healthy meal consists of portions of each group. You may be familiar with the MyPlate.
Fruit
Fruits are one of the main groups. Your body needs them because they provide your body with many vitamins, such as Vitamin C and vitamin A. They are also good for digestion. Fruits are generally healthy because they are not full of fat, and no fruits have cholesterol in them. Another benefit is that eating fruits gives you energy. If you do not eat enough fruit, you don't get enough dietary fiber.
Vegetables
Vegetables benefit your body greatly. Promoting healthy blood and healthy muscles, they are something you should consume every single day. They have so many nutrients in them and reduce blood cholesterol levels.
Grains
Grains are also a very important part of your diet. Grains promote proper bowel function. With fewer calories, they keep you full throughout the day. This makes it easier to maintain a healthy weight.
Protein
Protein keeps you full and it also helps muscle growth. Also, protein repairs tissues. Protein makes enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals.
Dairy
Dairy provides your body with vitamin D. It also helps you have strong bones because of the calcium in it. They are also nutrient-rich.
